Which Kohler Models This Applies To

Kohler’s residential plumbing lines for new construction and additions break into three tiers that matter for rough-in depth and valve compatibility. The Kohler Devonshire and Forté lines use standard 1/2-inch NPT connections with a 2-3/4-inch rough-in depth, which matches most California framing. The Kohler Purist and Stillness collections require the K-304-KS pressure-balance valve with a 3-3/8-inch rough-in, a detail that trips up crews who assume all Kohler trim fits all Kohler valves. The Kohler Artifacts line uses the same valve body as Devonshire but ships with a different escutcheon screw pattern, so the trim plate from one won’t cover the holes from another.

To identify what you have, look for the stamped model number on the valve body itself, visible through the plaster guard before drywall goes up. The label on the box won’t help you six months later when the trim kit arrives and the screw holes don’t line up. Signs Your Kohler Home Additions & ADU Is Failing

• Pressure test fails at 80 PSI with visible seepage around the valve stem. The Kohler K-304 ceramic disc cartridge has cracked, usually from over-torquing during installation or thermal shock when hot water first hits a cold valve in an unconditioned Los Angeles garage conversion.
• Trim plate sits proud of the finished wall by more than 1/8 inch. The rough-in depth was set for standard 1/2-inch drywall, but the ADU got 5/8-inch fire-rated Type X, a common mismatch in Los Angeles basement conversions where the building code changed mid-project.
• Shower valve delivers only lukewarm water despite full hot rotation. The pressure-balance spool is clogged with sediment from the City of Los Angeles water main, which runs harder in the Valley than on the Westside. • Tub spout diverter sticks or leaks from the showerhead when filling. The brass diverter gate in Kohler’s K-10272 spout corrodes in Los Angeles hard water, typically in 4-6 years. The spout threads are Kohler-proprietary 1/2-inch IPS with an unusual 5-1/2-inch reach, so a generic replacement won’t seat properly.
• Running toilet in a newly finished ADU bathroom. The Kohler canister-style flush valve, used in the Cimarron and Wellworth lines, ships with a seal that relaxes in the first 30 days of use. It’s a $12 part, but the tank has to come off to replace it, and the three-bolt Kohler tank-to-bowl gasket is different from the two-bolt standard.
