If that label is gone, measure the slab thickness and the jamb depth, then note whether the hinges are mortised or surface-mounted - Classic-Craft uses mortised 3-1/2″ x 3-1/2″ hinges at standard spacing, while some contractor-grade Smooth-Star units shipped with 4″ non-mortised hinges through 2019 that create compatibility headaches with modern hardware. • Weatherstrip compression set or light bleed. Therma-Tru’s Q-Lon foam weatherstrip has a 7-10 year service life in normal conditions, but steam from bathrooms without exhaust fans compresses it permanently in 3-4 years. You’ll see daylight at the strike jamb or feel air movement - the Q-Lon isn’t recoverable, but the kerf it sits in is standardized, so replacement is straightforward if caught before the kerf wood deteriorates.
• Hinge screws backing out or stripped. Fiberglass doors are heavier than hollow-core units, and the 3/4″ MDF edge on Classic-Craft doesn’t hold screws as aggressively as solid wood. When hinges loosen, the door sags and the latch misses the strike plate. In 80% of cases we can helicoil the hinge mortise and switch to longer screws that bite the jack stud; the other 20% need a new hinge-side jamb if the mortise has blown out.
• Threshold cap separation or corrosion. Therma-Tru’s adjustable aluminum thresholds work well until the adjustment screws seize from calcium buildup - inevitable in hard-water areas like the San Fernando Valley. Once the cap can’t be adjusted, the door bottom drags or the sweep tears. We stock replacement caps and the full threshold assembly; the cap alone runs $40-$60, the full threshold with composite base is $180-$240.
