Which Cambria Models This Applies To

Cambria organizes its quartz surfaces into design collections rather than model numbers, but the critical spec for home additions and ADUs is thickness: 2cm slabs require plywood substrate and often a laminated edge to look substantial, while 3cm slabs can span cabinet frames directly with a cleaner reveal. In Los Angeles, we see 3cm specified on about 80% of ADU kitchen projects because the upcharge is modest and the finished look is cleaner.

To identify your existing Cambria, check the underside edge for a printed lot number and collection name, or look for the warranty card issued at original installation. The Brittanicca, Berwyn, and Ella collections remain the most frequently requested in Los Angeles for ADU rentals because they hide wear and photograph well for listing photos. OEM Cambria is sourced through authorized fabricators only; we do not use aftermarket quartz substitutes and label ourselves as such because Cambria’s 10-year transferable warranty requires installation by a certified fabricator. Signs Your Cambria Home Additions & ADU Is Failing

• Hairline cracks at sink or cooktop cutouts. These originate from vibration during transport or inadequate support beneath the cutout edge. In Los Angeles, we see this most in ADU conversions where a homeowner reused old base cabinets rated for laminate, not 20 psf quartz.
• Seam separation or lifting at joints. Caused by substrate movement, often from seasonal humidity swings or a foundation settling. The seam itself isn’t the failure; the cabinet or wall behind it is.
• Surface dulling or whitening in a pattern. This indicates chemical damage from abrasive cleaners or prolonged bleach contact. Cambria is non-porous but not indestructible; the resin binder can degrade.
• Chipping at exposed edges, especially on islands. Impact damage from pots, pans, or vacuum cleaners hitting the corner. In rental ADUs, this is common near dishwasher loading zones.
• Discoloration or heat marks. Cambria tolerates brief contact up to roughly 300°F, but sustained heat from a crockpot or griddle can scorch the resin. We’ve replaced three such slabs in Mar Vista ADUs in the past two years.

What you can safely check: measure your existing countertop run and note where seams fall; photograph any cracks from multiple angles; test whether the surface is warm to the touch near dishwashers or other heat sources, which indicates a potential appliance issue compounding the surface problem.

Where DIY goes wrong: Cambria slabs weigh roughly 20 pounds per square foot, so a modest 8-foot island section is 160+ pounds of brittle material requiring suction cups and multiple handlers. Templating requires digital or physical patterns accurate to 1/8 inch; errors mean a $3,000 slab becomes landfill. Cutting, edging, and polishing require CNC equipment and water-fed saws that generate silica dust, which is hazardous to breathe and regulated in Los Angeles County. We do not recommend homeowner installation of quartz surfaces.
