Which Schluter Systems This Applies To

Schluter builds waterproofing and finishing systems, not single parts you swap like a faucet cartridge. The three families we install most in Los Angeles are KERDI (shower waterproofing membranes and drains), DITRA (uncoupling and waterproofing under tile floors), and SCHIENE/JOLLY/RONDEC (edge profiles that finish tile transitions). KERDI-DRAIN alone comes in six grate finishes and multiple bonding flange heights; the 2-inch PVC version won’t mate with your existing ABS rough-in without a transition coupling, a detail we’ve caught on at least a dozen Los Angeles slab-on-grade bathrooms where the original plumber used ABS in the 1980s.

To identify your system, look for the orange KERDI membrane (fabric-faced, not plastic-sheet), the orange-grid DITRA underlayment, or the brushed aluminum or brass-colored edge strips at tile transitions. The part number is stamped on the profile back every 12 inches. OEM Schluter components are engineered to bond together; aftermarket equivalents exist for edge profiles, but we don’t use them on wet-area membranes because the fleece-to-membrane weld is proprietary. If it’s not written down, it didn’t happen, and that includes the spec sheet matching your drain flange to your slab thickness.

Signs Your Schluter System Is Failing

• Hollow-sounding tile near the shower valve or curb. This means the KERDI membrane has delaminated from the substrate or the thinset bed has failed. Water is likely migrating behind the tile, and in Los Angeles’s dry climate, homeowners often miss this until the subfloor softens or mold appears on the drywall below.
• Grout cracking in straight lines along the shower curb or bench. The Schluter profile or membrane underneath has shifted, usually because the curb wasn’t built to Schluter’s specified pitch (minimum 1/4 inch per foot) or because an aftermarket profile was substituted and flexed differently under load.
• Water staining on the ceiling directly below the bathroom. This is the KERDI-DRAIN bonding flange or pipe seal. The flange must be set in a bed of unmodified thinset; if a previous installer used premixed mastic or skipped the fleece overlap at the corners, the seal fails at the first seasonal movement cycle.
• Floor tile tenting or popping in the bathroom doorway. DITRA was likely installed without full mortar coverage or the wrong trowel size was used (Schluter specifies a 11/64-inch square-notch for DITRA-XL). Los Angeles’s older concrete slabs move more than people expect; the uncoupling function only works if the membrane is fully embedded.
• Rust staining or discoloration at metal edge profiles. SCHIENE in standard aluminum is not rated for continuous water exposure. If your shower niche or curb was finished with aluminum instead of brass or stainless, the profile oxidizes and the tile edge loses support.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things yourself. Verify the Schluter part number on your profile edge. Run water and watch the drain flange for seepage with a flashlight. Measure your tile thickness against the profile leg height (SCHIENE comes in 3/8-inch, 1/2-inch, and 5/8-inch legs; the wrong one leaves a lip or a gap).

Where DIY goes wrong is the membrane work. KERDI must be installed with unmodified thinset over a properly pitched mud bed or Schluter-KERDI-BOARD, and the fleece-to-fleece seams require 2-inch overlaps with a Schluter-KERDI-FIX sealant at changes of plane. Get the mortar consistency wrong by half a cup of water and the membrane delaminates in six months. The drain flange, if not bonded to a stable substrate, cracks when the house shifts during Santa Ana wind season. We don’t recommend homeowners cut into a Schluter shower assembly themselves; the system warranty is voided by improper installation, and the water damage that follows costs three times the original fix.
