The wrong profile size leaves a visible lip or gap. We also see homeowners try to patch with generic L-channel from a big-box store, which doesn’t have the integrated bonding flange Schluter designed for wet areas. For DITRA-HEAT specifically, the heating cable must match the thermostat generation, either DHERT or the newer DHERT2/BT series. Mixing generations burns out the cable or throws error codes.

Signs Your Schluter System Is Failing

• Tile cracks in a straight line above the dishwasher or sink. This usually means the DITRA uncoupling membrane was either omitted or improperly bonded to the subfloor, so the tile and substrate move as one unit instead of independently. In Los Angeles, we see this often in 1960s slab-on-grade homes in Culver City where the concrete has minor seasonal movement.
• Grout turning dark and staying dark near the backsplash. Persistent darkening indicates water is getting behind the tile because the KERDI membrane or KERDI-BAND seam tape failed at a corner or penetration. The waterproofing layer is compromised, not the tile itself.
• Soft drywall below the sink cabinet, especially at the side walls. KERDI-BOARD should protect these areas; if it’s swelling or crumbling, the board was cut too close to the plumbing penetration without proper KERDI-FIX sealant, or the fastener washers missed the membrane overlap zone.
• DITRA-HEAT thermostat showing “sensor error” or not reaching set temperature. The floor sensor probe, a thin wire run through the mat, may have been nicked during tile installation or damaged by a subsequent cabinet anchor. The cable itself can test fine while the sensor fails.
• Metal edge profiles lifting or rusting at the counter-to-tile joint. QUADEC and RONDEC are aluminum or stainless; if they’re corroding, someone used a steel substitute or the profile was set in a wet area without the Schluter-recommended sealant behind it. DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground. You can verify the Schluter product name from any remaining packaging or by photographing the profile edge and comparing to Schluter’s online catalog. You can check the thermostat model number and the error code in the manual. You can measure the square footage of the area needing membrane.

What goes wrong fast: cutting KERDI membrane or KERDI-BOARD around plumbing without overlapping seams properly, which voids the waterproofing warranty and funnels water into the wall cavity. Setting DITRA-HEAT cable spacing by eye instead of using the factory-marked mat studs, which creates hot spots that overheat and trip the breaker. And grinding old thinset off a concrete slab to prep for new DITRA, which kicks up crystalline silica and requires respirator-rated protection.
