Small & Partial Kitchen Remodels in Los Angeles, CA
A small or partial kitchen remodel in Los Angeles typically runs between $8,000 and $35,000, depending on what’s being replaced and what’s staying put. Most projects finish within two to four weeks. If your kitchen functions reasonably well but has one or two things that genuinely bother you every day – outdated cabinet fronts, countertops that have seen better days, a layout that wastes the corner cabinet entirely – a partial remodel targets exactly those problems without touching everything else.
Grant Rowan started Rowan Construction Group in 2007 with one standing rule: the price is written down before anyone picks up a tool. That rule has held across 4,000-plus projects, and it applies here the same as it does on a full gut renovation. If you want to talk through what a partial remodel might cost for your specific kitchen, call us at (213) 652-7670. Estimates are free, the price is flat, and nothing proceeds until you’ve signed off on it in writing.

When You Need Small & Partial Kitchen Remodels
Not every kitchen problem calls for a full demolition. Here are the situations where a targeted, partial remodel makes more sense than starting over:
- The cabinet boxes are solid but the doors and drawer fronts look dated. In a lot of Los Feliz and Silver Lake homes built between 1955 and 1975, the original cabinet carcasses are actually well-built plywood – the hinges and pulls are just showing their age. Refacing or replacing the doors alone can change the look of the entire kitchen for a fraction of full-replacement cost.
- The countertop is laminate and you’re about to sell or refinance. Laminate countertops are a consistent sticking point in LA home inspections and appraisals, especially in the $900K-plus market. Swapping to a Cambria or Caesarstone quartz surface is a one-trade scope that takes three to five days and photographs significantly better.
- One appliance is failing and the surrounding layout has never worked. A single appliance swap is simple, but if the refrigerator is in the wrong corner or the range hood vents nowhere useful, addressing the cabinet configuration around it at the same time costs less than coming back later.
- The backsplash is original 1980s tile and it’s pulling the whole room down. Backsplash work is one of the cleaner partial-remodel scopes – contained, fast, and visually high-impact. We see this frequently in Culver City and Mid-City homes where the rest of the kitchen has already been updated but the backsplash was skipped.
- The sink, faucet, or plumbing rough-in is causing problems. A failing basket strainer, a garbage disposal that’s stopped working, or a faucet that drips constantly can be rolled into a small counter-and-sink package rather than handled as a service call and then a remodel call six months apart.
- Storage is genuinely insufficient and the kitchen is otherwise fine. Adding a pantry cabinet, a pull-out drawer system inside existing lower cabinets, or an island on casters addresses storage without touching plumbing, electrical, or flooring. In smaller Los Angeles apartments and condos – particularly in Koreatown and Westlake – this is often the right scope.
Our Small & Partial Kitchen Remodels Process

The process is the same whether the scope is one trade or four. The only thing that changes is how many steps are active on your project.
- Written scope and flat price before anything starts. We walk the kitchen, measure what needs measuring, and document existing conditions with photos. Then we write a scope of work – specific materials, specific brands, specific quantities – and attach a flat price to it. Under Clause 1 of the Haven Standard, that price is in writing before any work starts. If something changes during the project, a signed change order precedes any additional work. No surprises at the end of the job.
- Material selection from vetted brands at honest lead times. For countertops, we work with Cambria and Caesarstone because their slab inventory in the LA market is predictable and their tolerances are consistent. For cabinets and cabinet components, KraftMaid and Wellborn give us a range from semi-custom to fully custom without the inflated pricing that comes with smaller fabricators. We’ll tell you the actual lead time on the material before you sign – not the optimistic one.
- Permit determination and documentation. Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety (LADBS) requires permits for work that moves plumbing, electrical circuits, or load-bearing elements. A backsplash swap or a counter-and-sink replacement typically does not trigger a permit. A range hood that requires new ductwork through an exterior wall usually does. We make this determination in writing during the scoping phase, not after demo starts.
- Phased scheduling so your kitchen stays as functional as possible. For partial remodels, we sequence trades to minimize the days you’re without a working sink or cooktop. In practice, most single-trade scopes leave you without full kitchen use for two to four days. Multi-trade scopes run five to fifteen days of active disruption depending on complexity. We put the schedule in writing.
- Documented photo record at every visit. Every crew visit includes a photo record of what was found, what was done, and what the finished state looks like. This is a standard deliverable at Rowan, included in the project price – not an upgrade you request. The photos go to you directly. If there’s ever a question about what happened on day three, the answer exists in the file.
- 365-Day Done Right Promise. When the project closes, the 365-Day Done Right Promise starts. If something isn’t right within a year of completion, we make it right – that commitment is printed in the contract terms, not mentioned verbally and then forgotten. Background-checked, uniformed crew members close the project the same way they opened it: on the record.

AfterSmall & Partial Kitchen Remodels Pricing in Los Angeles
Small and partial kitchen remodels in Los Angeles run across a fairly wide range because the scope varies so much from project to project. The ranges below are based on current material and labor costs in the LA market. A flat written price for your specific project is available at no charge – call (213) 652-7670 to schedule a walkthrough.
| Scope | Typical Los Angeles Range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Cabinet refacing (doors, drawer fronts, hardware) | $4,500 – $12,000 | Depends on linear footage and door style. Solid wood vs. thermofoil affects cost. |
| Countertop replacement only (quartz or stone) | $3,200 – $9,500 | Cambria and Caesarstone mid-range slabs. Edge profile and cutouts affect the number. |
| Backsplash replacement | $1,800 – $5,500 | Tile material is the biggest variable. Subway tile sits at the low end; handmade or large-format tile at the high end. |
| Sink and faucet replacement (Kohler or equivalent) | $950 – $2,800 | Includes demo, new sink, faucet, and reconnection. Add $400-$900 if countertop cutout needs modification. |
| Cabinet addition (pantry, island, or storage upgrade) | $2,500 – $8,000 | Semi-custom KraftMaid or Wellborn cabinets. Electrical or plumbing integration adds to this. |
| Multi-trade partial remodel (counters + cabinets + backsplash) | $14,000 – $35,000 | Most common scope for homeowners updating without moving walls. LADBS permit may apply. |
What moves the price in the Los Angeles market specifically
- Access and parking constraints. In dense neighborhoods like Echo Park, Hancock Park, or parts of the Valley, crew access and material delivery add time and cost that don’t exist on a property with a wide driveway.
- Existing condition of the substrate. In many LA homes built before 1985, the wall substrate behind tile is a mud-set mortar bed rather than cement board. Demo takes longer and the replacement layer has to be specified correctly – usually Schluter-brand membrane or equivalent – before new tile goes up.
- Lead times on specific materials. Some Cambria patterns and custom KraftMaid door styles have six- to eight-week lead times in the current LA supply chain. We factor this into the schedule before you sign, not after.
- Permit fees. LADBS fees for a kitchen remodel permit in Los Angeles currently run $500 to $1,800 depending on project valuation. Where a permit is required, the fee is line-itemed in your written quote.

FAQs – Small & Partial Kitchen Remodels

How much does a small kitchen remodel cost in Los Angeles?
A small kitchen remodel in Los Angeles typically costs between $8,000 and $35,000 for a partial scope – meaning one to three trades rather than a full gut. A single-trade project like countertop replacement runs $3,200 to $9,500. A multi-trade partial remodel covering cabinets, countertops, and backsplash lands between $14,000 and $35,000 in the current LA market. The flat written price for your specific kitchen is available at no cost – call (213) 652-7670 to schedule a walkthrough and get the number on paper.
Do I need a permit for a partial kitchen remodel in Los Angeles?
It depends on what’s being changed. In Los Angeles, LADBS requires a permit when work involves moving or adding electrical circuits, relocating plumbing supply or drain lines, or modifying structural elements. Cosmetic work – Cabinet Installation & Refacing, countertop swaps, backsplash replacement, new fixtures at existing rough-in locations – generally does not require a permit. We determine permit requirements in writing during the scoping phase, before any work begins. If a permit is needed, the LADBS fee is included as a line item in your written quote, not added later.
How long does a partial kitchen remodel take in Los Angeles?
Most single-trade partial remodels in Los Angeles take three to seven business days from first day of work to completion. Multi-trade scopes covering cabinets, countertops, and backsplash typically run two to four weeks, which includes material lead time. The schedule is written into the project documents before you sign. The biggest variable in the LA market right now is cabinet lead time – KraftMaid semi-custom doors can run four to six weeks depending on the door style, so we confirm availability before committing to a start date.
Is it worth doing a partial remodel rather than a full kitchen renovation?
A partial remodel makes sense when the kitchen’s layout and structure are functional but specific elements are failing or outdated. If the cabinet boxes are solid, the plumbing is in a reasonable location, and the flooring is in good shape, replacing only the countertops and cabinet fronts often returns more per dollar spent than a full gut – especially in the Los Angeles resale market where buyers can see the difference between a fresh surface and a well-planned renovation. A full gut makes sense when the layout itself is the problem or when multiple systems (electrical, plumbing, structural) need updating at the same time. We’ll tell you which scope fits your kitchen after the walkthrough, not before – because the answer depends on what we find when we look at the substrate, not what the photos suggest.
What to Expect When You Call
A live person answers at Rowan Construction Group 24 hours a day. When you call about a partial kitchen remodel, we’ll schedule a walkthrough at a time that works for you – no hour-long sales appointment, no pressure to decide the same day. After the walkthrough, you receive a flat written price with a written scope and a written warranty. Under Clause 1 of the Haven Standard, no work starts until that price is signed. No change proceeds without a signed change order after that.
Grant Rowan built this company on the idea that a contractor who puts the number in writing before any work starts is a different kind of contractor. Since 2007, that’s been the only way Rowan operates – across Kitchen Remodeling, Bathroom Remodeling, Roofing, Windows and Doors, Fence Installation, Driveway and Pavers, and Home Additions. The 4,000-plus projects delivered under that system all have one thing in common: a written price the customer agreed to before the crew arrived.
If you have a competitor’s written estimate, bring it. The Free Second Opinion is available at no charge – we’ll review it line by line and tell you what the numbers mean.
